Testimony of Efraim Goldschmidt, born in Berlin, Germany, 1921, regarding his experiences in aliya training, Paderborn, Buna and a death march
Life in Berlin until 1933; move to a Jewish school, 1935; identification with Zionism, 1938; participation in
aliya training in Kibbutz Jessen and afterwards in Ellguth, 1939; work in agriculture and as an agricultural instructor.
Liquidation of the aliya training, 1941; transfer to Paderborn with members of Hechalutz under conditions of a forced labor camp; hunger; help from Christian residents; labor in local factories; deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau and transfer to Buna on the same day, early 1943; labor in concrete and as a porter; pneumonia; help from friends who received more food and from "begging" for over two years; transfer to easier labor for three months with help from a friend, September 1944; deportation to a death march, 19 January 1945; marches 30 kilometers a day; digs anti-tank trenches; liberation by the Red Army, May 1945.
Aliya training; aliya attempt; detention in Cyprus; aliya to Eretz Israel.
