Outbreak of the war, 1939; escape of his parents to the Soviet Union; witness is fostered by the owner of a suitcase factory; disappearance of the witness' brother; life in the Warsaw Ghetto; hunger; "Aktions"; Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, April 1943; in hiding in a bunker with another 400 Jews; rumors concerning cannibalism; escape to the Aryan side via the sewers during the liquidation of the ghetto; hidden by a Polish couple together with his uncle and aunt; the disappearance of his uncle and aunt at the start of the Warsaw Polish Uprising; witness' escape to Kozienice; witness walks almost 500 kilometers to Zakopane; stay in the "Nasz dom" orphanage, 1944-1945; life in the orphanage; liberation by the Red Army. Move to France; stay in a children's institution; reunion with his mother.
