Deportation to the Zamosc Ghetto, 1941; Judenrat; daily ghetto life; deportation of his parents to Belzec camp in the second "Aktion", 1942; move to an aunt; deportations to the killing pit in Izbica; escape from the convoy en route to Izbica with a girl who is younger than him; hides from Polish children who wanted to turn them in; quick-wittedness by the girl which succeeded in turning the Polish children from enemies into friends; return to his aunt; sealing of the ghetto, July 1942; typhus; hunger; burial of the dead; builds hiding places; life in hiding; deportation to Izbica; a march and a riot; escape to a forest; develops animal instincts and survival methods; return to Zamosc; help from a neighbor; return to life on the roads equipped with food and warm clothes; labor for devout Polish Catholics in Debowiec; constant fear of exposure; attempt to change his sex organ including using a rabbit skin; identification with the Christian religion when he is lonely and in emotional distress; attends a Polish school; dilemmas deriving from his dual identity; liberation by the Red Army, July 1944; indecision whether or not to reveal his Jewish identity to the Red Army soldiers.
