Life in the Czortkow Ghetto until 1943; her mother's work as a pharmacist, essential work; fate of her father, a lawyer, who was executed as part of a group of 40 educated Jews; her mother smuggles her out of the ghetto to the city of Warsaw with forged documents and a false identity; the Szulc family, Volksdeutsche and their housemaid, Mrs. Czaplinska, rescue her; her mother's resourcefulness in her Polish identity, as a devout Christian; life of the witness as an antisemitic Polish child; fate of her mother who perished; the Warsaw Polish Uprising, August 1944; her evacuation to the Pruszkow camp with the housemaid; escape from the camp to the Krakow area; liberation by the Red Army in Warsaw, which is in ruins.
