Annexation of Austria, March 1938; confiscation of property from the family's shop and later its liquidation; deportation from the city to Vienna within 24 hours, summer 1938; life in the Jewish quarter with his grandparents; attends a Jewish school; deportation of his father to Dachau, November 1938; his father's release after his mother obtained visas for China, six months later; payment of a large sum of money to the Germans and departure to Bratislava in a train full of Jews, December 1939; detention in a hotel, at first; detention in an abandoned army camp in relatively comfortable conditions, for nine months; departure on six German river boats until arrival to Romania, August 1940; continuation of travel on the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea on three rickety wooden ships; transfer to the "Patria" ship which was sunk; transfer by British soldiers to a lifeboat and arrival to Haifa; detention in Atlit camp; release, six months later.
