Testimony of Dr. Schaul (Saul Kaleko) Barkali, born in Eisiskes, Poland, 1900, regarding his function as the leader of the Tarbutdepartment (Department of Adult Education) of the Zionistische Vereinigung fuer Deutschland (ZVfD- Zionist Association for Germany), 1934-1938
Dr. Saul Kaleko was the co-founder of the Hebrew language courses for the ZVfD and a Hebrew teacher, May 1933- August 1938; he distributed Ivrit Lechol Ish, his course book for teaching the Hebrew language, and wrote the Hebrew supplement to the "Juedische Rundschau", Jewish newspaper.
- Literary activities including lectures, seminars and training courses for teachers;
- Work as a foreign correspondent;
- Correspondence, including correspondence with non-Jews (among them, Agnes Fassgold, a nun from Hersfeld);
- Difficulties encountered in his work:
*Observation of his Hebrew courses by the Gestapo;
*Prohibition of lectures in Hebrew language;
*Interrogation by the Gestapo after a permitted Hebrew lecture in Leipzig;
- Daily reports sent abroad in different languages and disclosure by phone or air mail by using different code names; ending his illegal correspondence after the detention of Fink, another Jewish foreign correspondent, who was sentenced to seven years imprisonment, and perished or was killed in Ploetzensee;
- Emigration and help at the police estimate of his library, September 1938.
