W. Y. Tonn emigrated from Berlin to Shanghai in 1939; he was completely fluent in Far Eastern languages, and he published approximately 400 literary articles regarding Asian cultures. Immediately after the establishment of the Shanghai Ghetto in 1943, Tonn founded the Asia Seminar as a free university for culture and science in Kongkou.
