Documentation associated with the experiences of Náthán Schwarcz during the Holocaust - Submitter's remarks: Miriam Bugler, the submitter, is the granddaughter of Náthán Schwarcz, born in Nyíregyháza in 1899. Náthán Schwarcz and his family lived in Gheorgheni; they were evicted from their home after Hungary annexed the area; reached Debrecen in 1942; Náthán Schwarcz sent to a labor camp in Debrecen in 1944; works as a translator for Germans; escapes from the camp and reaches a Red Cross hospital; hides in the hospital with doctors' assistance; area liberated in late 1944 by Red Army forces; Red Cross clinic established for treatment of Jewish survivors of the camps; family moves to Arad; aid to survivors in Arad. - excerpt from book titled "A Hundred Years of Debrecen Jewry" [Hebrew] by Eliahu Gonda (published in 1970), about Náthán Schwarcz of Gheorgheni, who established a hospital in Debrecen after the city was liberated in late 1944, with help of the Joint (American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee) and the Red Cross.
