Documentation from the Latvian State Historical Archives (Latvijas Valsts Vestures Arhivs - LVVA), 1918-1945

National Archives of Latvia, Latvian State Historical Archives (Latvijas Valsts vēstures arhīvs - LVVA), , ЛГИА (Латвийский государственный исторический архив), 1920–1945 Included in the Archives are documents from state and local authorities, Courts of Law, estates, religious organizations, political and public organizations, documents from enterprises and other corporate bodies, and documents of private individuals. The 6,311 archival fonds contain 6,349,095 files. The fonds contain extensive information regarding activities related to the social, political, military, economic and cultural life in Latvia. The fonds comprise documents that chronologically cover the most comprehensive and ancient period of the history of Latvia (from the 13th century to 1945) and serve as a valuable resource for thematic research. The Yad Vashem Archives received approximately 1,141,269 pages from the LVVA during 2010 - 2020. The M.43.LVVA Sub-Record Group - Documentation in the Yad Vashem Archives Documentation from the Ministry of Jewish Education in Latvia during 1918-1940: Lists of Jewish pupils, from religious, secular, elementary, high schools, vocational schools, gymnasiums, colleges and kindergartens, and personal files of Jewish teachers and lecturers; Jewish students in Latvian universities; Jewish education in Latvia has deep historical roots: until 1940 Jewish children could study in Latvian, Hebrew, Yiddish and German. Records from Jewish organizations in Latvia: "Torah and Derech", "Hamore", "Trumpeldor", "Mahane Yisrael", "Herzliya", "Oze", and others. 64,304 questionnaire cards of Jews, according to the 1935 census in Latvia, in the following places: Riga, Daugavpils, Liepaja Ventspils, Rezekne, Vilani, Varakliani, Bausk, Dagda, Ludza, Tukums, and others. Included is documentation from the Latvian Jewish Association for the Promotion of Settlement in Eretz Israel, including correspondence with Zionist organizations in Eretz Israel, reviews of the activities of Zionist organizations in Europe and the United States, and reviews of the activities of public organizations in Eretz Israel during 1936-1940. Lists of residents who received food stamps from the department of commerce in the municipality in Riga, Latvia, during 1939-1940. 42,549 passports of Jewish residents in Riga, 1920-1940. Passports were submitted to the local authorities for the purpose of renewal or acceptance of Latvian citizenship. Passports include personal information including a personal photo, personal signature and fingerprint. Passports contain personal data regarding the person and his family, the place of registration or change of address, a record of changing the surname with the signature of the rabbi, border crossing stamps, election records, and death records. Included is a collection of 60 microfilm reels of house committee books arranged according to street names in Riga, before the residents were deported to the ghetto during August-September 1941.
