During the National Socialist era, Johannes Hamel was a radical opponent of the loyal state church and therefore did not get a job. In 1938, he became head of the Department of Studies of the Confessing Church in Halle and was ordained as assistant preacher. Because he helped Jewish parishioners, he was forced to work in the Leuna Works in 1941. A little later he was called up for service in the Wehrmacht.
