Offspring of a haredi ("ultra-Orthodox") family of esteemed lineage; father inducted into the Hungarian Army labor service (munkaszolgálat); witness placed with grandmother in eger; German occupation ensues; escapes back to Budapest in 1944; returns accompanied by a local woman resident because Jews are not allowed to travel; appeal to Raoul Wallenberg and witness obtains protective documents with his assistance; concealed in the cellar of a protected house established by Wallenberg to save Jews; harsh living conditions; diseases; malnutrition; witness escapes through other cellars during an Arrow Cross raid of protected houses; liberation by Red Army forces in January 1945; mother takes witness back to the family home; father returns to home from labor service in Ukraine; father obtains penicillin to save her life; family moves to Eger; opens a bakery; hosts Jewish refugees; escapes to Austria in 1946; passes through the Heidenheim displaced persons camp and reaches The Hague; witness immigrates to Israel via France in 1949; adjusts to life in Israel.
