Testimony of György Gáti, born in Budapest, Hungary in 1925, regarding his experiences as an employee in the Swedish Embassy in Budapest The witness has a relative who resides in Sweden; the witness and his father work as clerks in the Swedish Embassy in Budapest, on Jókai Street no. 1, starting in October 1944; they receive the work with help from Danielson, the Swedish Ambassador; life in the Embassy building; help to Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg at railroad stations; detention by Arrow Cross Party men on 25 November 1944; transfer to building no. 37 on Városház Street, where he was tortured; transfer from Buda to Pest; murder of approximately 57 of the 72 people, en route; he is rescued twice thanks to an acquaintance who is among the Arrow Cross Party men; they meet a police officer in Erzsébet-híd, who stops the "Aktion"; transfer to building no. 4 on Teleki tér Street; transfer to building no. 10; they are given beatings and are then handed over to the German authorities; transfer to forced labor in Csepel, several days later; escape from the forced labor; escape to Jókai Street no. 1, where his father resides; attack on the building by Arrow Cross Party men and by SS soldier Vörösváry during 07-08 January 1945; gendarmes protect the building because it is owned by the Swedish Embassy; murders by shooting, and the theft of property; transfer of 300 people to building no. 14 on Városház Street; transfer to the edge of the Danube River; escape with his father en route, and their detention by two Germans; transfer to the SS headquarters; he and his father identify themselves as Swedish diplomats; transfer to the Swedish Embassy, where people there confirm that he and his father are Swedish diplomats; transfer in a "Diplomatic" vehicle to building no. 4 on Tátra Street; liberation on 16 January 1945; Interviewer: Margit Oblath.
