Testimony of Eliyahoo Skinezes, born in 1940 in Athens, Greece, about his experiences in hiding with a non-Jewish family and his escape to Israel via Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon Son of a religious family in Athens; maternal grandfather was community rabbi in 1922–1951; community life and differences between the Athens Jewish community and that in Saloniki; Germans order Jews to register in 1943; father decides to escape via Turkey; finding a hideout with a non-Jewish family and staying there for about a year; family escapes through the mountains and reaches Evia island; sails to Izmir; escapes to relatives on mother's side in Izmir; several weeks later escapes via Syria and Lebanon to Eretz Israel, reaching Eretz Israel in 1944; war ends; back to Greece during civil war; re-immigration to Israel in 1949; adjustment to life in Israel and starting anew.
