Testimony of Joseph Garshtein, born in 1933 in Warsaw, about his experiences as a boy in the Warsaw ghetto, on the "Aryan" side, and in hiding on a non-Jewish Pole's farm Childhood in Warsaw; German occupation ensues in 1939; family deported to the ghetto in 1940; father disappears in 1941; life in the ghetto; witness escapes from the ghetto with two other boys; finds hiding places in streets and lofts on the "Aryan" side; hunger; finds hiding in the home of a non-Jewish Polish woman for several months; arrested by Polish gendarmes; handed on to German soldiers and placed aboard a transport to Treblinka in 1943; train stops due to bombardments; witness escapes from the train and reaches the farm of a non-Jewish Pole; works on the farm as a cowboy; forwards notices to the partisans; liberated by Red Army forces in 1944; removed from the farm, apparently by members of the Koordinacja; placed in a Jewish children's home in Košice; transferred to a children's home in Prague in 1945; sent on to London; placed in a Jewish children's home in Ilkley; lives and goes to school there; moves to London in 1949; immigrates to Israel in 1949, adjusts to life in Israel.
