Testimony of Aleks Burshtein, born in 1940 in Kaunas, Lithuania, about his experiences as an infant in the Kaunas ghetto and in hiding with Ukrainian Christian women Soviet occupation and rule in 1940; German occupation ensues in 1941; witness deported to Kaunas ghetto; living conditions in the ghetto; parents mobilized for forced labor; father is assistant to the Judenrat chairman; Aktionen; hidden in a bunker in the ghetto during Aktion in 1942; hidden with a Lithuanian woman acquaintance in Kaunas and sent back to the ghetto in 1943; uncle escapes to the partisans; witness hiden with a Lithuanian woman in Kaunas; father deported to Dachau, Germany, in 1944; mother deported to Stutthof camp in Germany; liberation by Red Army forces; witness placed with uncle, who returned to Kaunas after serving with the partisans; mother returns from the camp in 1945; uncle arrested by Soviets for activity on the black market; mother, uncle, and witness escape to Wilno; slip across the border to Dresden; move via Berlin to the Landsberg displaced persons camp; life in the camp; witness immigrates to Israel in 1949; emigrates to Winnepeg, Canada, in 1952.
