Testimony of Esther Maria Katz (Chik), born in 1927 in Czechoslovakia, regarding her experiences in the Slatina Ghetto, Auschwitz-Birkenau and the Sudetenland Daughter of a large Orthodox religious family in Czechoslovakia; her father's work as a tailor; antisemitism; the area’s re-annexation into Hungary; publication of anti-Jewish decrees and laws; life under curfew; the cessation of school studies; sawmill work; deportation to the Slatina Ghetto during Passover of 1944; life in the ghetto for seven weeks; deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau; selection in the camp; the murder of her mother and little sister; inactivity; hunger; suicides; the sisters’ support of their youngest sister; selection seven months later; transfer to forced labor in a weapons factory in the Sudetenland region; improvement in living conditions; the disappearance of the Germans in May 1945; liberation by the Red Army; return to Czechoslovakia; reunion with the fifth sister; receiving help from the JDC; rehabilitation; aliya to Israel in 1974; absorption.
