History of the State Archive of the Grodno Region
Following the handing over of most of the area of the Belostok region to Poland and the establishment of the Grodno region inside the Belorussian Republic, the Archive of the Grodno Region was established as part of the system of the People's Commissariat for Interior Affairs (NKVD) in September 1944. In 2007, the Archive acted under the head administration of the Ministry of Justice in the regional Executive committee.
Included in the collection:
Soviet documentation from the Grodno region, from the period before the German occupation, and including documentation of the Regional Committee of the Communist Party, 1939-1941; documentation of the Municipal Committee of the Communist Party and the NKVD; lists of workers, 1940-1941; lists of candidates, members of the election committees and election observers, 1939-1940; lists of homeowners; lists of Soviet activists; and others.
Documentation from the local administrations from the period of the German occupation, 1941-1944, including documentation of the official administrative bodies in Grodno, 1941; guidelines of the Reichskommissar fuer das Ostland (Reich Governor of Ostland) in Riga to the Generalkommissar of Belorussia in Minsk, regarding the confiscation of property in the Belorussia area that had cultural value by Einsatzstab Rosenberg (Rosenberg operation headquarters) in 1941; letters from the mayor of Grodno to the Ortskommandatur (local headquarters) in the city; travel permits for Jews, from 1942; correspondence of the Nowogrodek Gebietskommissariat (district commission), mainly with the district heads, 1941-1944; guidelines from the Kreiskommissar (district commissioner) of Grodno in Poland; list of Jews in various professions, and other documentation.
Reports, orders, instructions and survey reports by the local occupation authorities in the Grodno region during 1941-1945, including of record groups of the Amtskommissar of Grodno, of the mayor of Grodno, of the labor bureau of East Prussia, of the municipal administration in Grodno, and of the district Gendarmerie of the Bialystok region in Grodno.
