Transport No. 28 departed from Aspang station in Vienna (Wien) on June 20, 1942 and arrived in Theresienstadt on June 21. The transport consisted of 1,001 Jews, 977 of them were older than 61 years. The average age of the deportees was 72. This was the first of 13 transports made up mainly of elderly Jewish deportees (Alterstransporte) from Vienna to Theresienstadt during the summer of 1942. The train followed a rout that took it through Vienna’s northern railway station, Floridsdorf, Jedlersdorf, Stockerau, Absdorf-Hippersdorf, Gmünd, Tabor, Prague (Praha) and Bohusovice. The deportees were taken off the train at the Bohusovice station and forced by the awaiting SS personnel and Czech gendarmerie to walk the approximately 3 km to Theresienstadt, carrying their backpacks. Only people who were unable to walk were taken in trucks. The transport was given the reference IV/1 in the Theresienstadt ghetto listings; in this regard the Roman numeral IV refers to Vienna. In Theresienstadt many of the elderly Jewish deportees who had arrived on these transports died of hunger and disease during the summer months. Others were transferred in October 1942 from Theresienstadt to Treblinka, where they were murdered.
