Transport from Westerbork, Camp, The Netherlands to Auschwitz Birkenau, Extermination Camp, Poland on 23/01/1943

On January 14, 1943 the leaders of the Jewish Council in Deventer located in the province of Overijsel (which was a sub-department of the Jewish Council in Amsterdam) were arrested by the ‘Schalkhaar’ Police Battalion, a Dutch police unit that was trained by the SS in Schalkhaar near Deventer. While they were held captive at the police station in Deventer, the Schalkhaar police arrested almost the entire Jewish local community in their homes. Some of them were released. The others were deported to Westerbork. The SD (Sicherheitsdienst - Security Service) from Arnhem was responsible for their transport from Deventer to Westerbork. On the same day about 95 Jews were arrested in their homes in The Hague. Out of these, 59 were transported to Westerbork. On the following day about 70 more Jews were arrested in The Hague and 34 of these were transported to Westerbork. In a report issued by the Jewish Council dated January 25, it is mentioned that employees of the Jewish Council in The Hague were exempt. According to another report issued by the Jewish Council dated January 14, about 450 Jews were arrested in Amsterdam on January 13 and on the night of January 14. They were brought to the Hollandsche Schouwburg, a former theater in the East of Amsterdam, which served as an assembly site. In the minutes of a meeting held by the Jewish Council dated January 25, it is reported that mainly the elderly and sick were seized in old-age homes and other institutions. They were transported on January 19 to Westerbork. The OD (Ordnungsdienst, the Jewish camp police) reported that this transport, which consisted of 430 deportees, arrived in Westerbork at 8:45 a.m....
