On December 13, 1943 the first Sondertransport (special transport) labeled Z1 left Mechelen. On board were 132 Jewish deportees who were Hungarian, Romanian, Spanish or Turkish nationals. They received special status because these countries were Axis or neutral countries. By order of the head of the Gestapo Heinrich Müller they were not to be deported to Auschwitz for political reasons. Instead, the men were deported to Buchenwald and the women and children to Ravensbrück.

On April 19, 1944, a second transport in the same category, transport Z3, departed from the Mechelen camp....
