The transport destined for Auschwitz of September 2, 1942 was made up of approximately 120 children, the remainder of those who had been transferred from the Pithiviers and Beaune-la-Rolande camps to Drancy throughout August 1942. They were joined by over 800 Jews from the unoccupied zone who had been arrested during the roundup of August 26 and deported to the Drancy camp in three transports. The first departed from Nexon on August 29 with 446 Jews from the Limoges region. The second departed from Lyon with a total of 544 Jews and finally a transport left Nice on August 31 with 560 Jews. On August 20, Heinz Roethke sent out directives to the Feldgendarmerie (German military police) concerning the next transports to leave Drancy, including the transport scheduled for September 2. He requested that the Feldgendarmerie provide one officer and eight men to guard the train and indicated that this security team was to be ready at the Drancy camp by 06:00 am....
