On October 6, 1944, the city of Dortmund was bombed and several strategic points were targeted including the central railway station. In spite of the widespread destruction, the fifth transport departed from Dortmund in December that year and arrived at Theresienstadt on December 22. There was a single Jew on this transport, a 66 year old man named Simon Hamberg who was baptized under the name Ludwig. The logistics involved for the deportation of individuals was far simpler than for larger transports since the deportee was placed under guard on a regular passenger train that went through Theresienstadt.
There are no documents attesting to the exact time of the departure of this transport. However, considering, the massive Allied bombardments that made transport difficult and the numerous refugees at the railway stations, it may be assumed that the journey by train took several days.
Upon arrival in Theresienstadt, the transport was registered under the number X/4 Ez4. The Roman numeral X referred to the city of Dortmund.
