On January 27, 1942, the Dortmund Gestapo which also took part in the operation sent a transport to Riga with about 1,000 Jews from Dortmund and the surrounding towns, including Bochum, Castrop-Rauxel, Dorsten, Gelsenkirchen, Hattingen, Herne, Muenster, Recklinghausen, Wanne-Eickel, Wattenscheid, and Werne/Lippe.
The deportees were ordered to report to the assembly site established by the Gestapo at the “Zur Boerse” restaurant near the livestock market, at Steinstrasse 35. This site was chosen due to its proximity to the central railway station. The deportees who came from the outlying towns were first taken by train to Dortmund and then transported to the assembly site. The summons that the deportees received stated: “You must report together with your family to the grand hall of the “Boerse” in Dortmund on January 20 at 8:00 am for the purpose of a work assignment in the East '”.
Edith Marx, who was on this transport, recalls her arrival at the site: “We received the summons […] We also received a list of provisions that we were to bring with us: tools, digging implements, ovens and so forth. The Jewish community purchased the items for those who could not afford them. We were allowed to take up to 20 kg of personal belongings. We stayed at the Boerse in Dortmund for four days”....
