Transport V/8 departed from Dresden on 29 March 1943 and arrived in Theresienstadt later the same day. There were 32 people on this transport, including at least twelve Jews from the city of Halle, seven from the city of Chemnitz, four from Leipzig and others from smaller towns in the area such as Plauen. Only one woman of this transport came from Dresden. Prior to the deportation the majority had been forced to live in houses designated for Jews only, the “Judenhäuser”. The deportees were between 12 and 84 years old.
Apart from Martin Mutschmann, there were other key figures involved in the execution of this transport: Wili Müller-Metz, the head of Gestapo Dresden, and Johannes Thümmler, the head of Gestapo Chemnitz, authorized it, while Werner Jacob, the head of Department IV in Dresden, and Henry Schmidt, the head of the Dresden Department for Jewish Affairs in the RSHA, were responsible for organizing and carrying it out. The latter however was most likely the person most involved in the deportations of Jews from the city. He was present in the assembly camps and also accompanied two or three transports to Theresienstadt.
The guidelines recommended that Gestapo units force the Reich Association of Jews in Germany and local Jewish communities to assist in preparing the transports. In Dresden Dr. Kurt Hirschel was responsible for this task. He was the last administrative director of the city’s Jewish community until his deportation in June 1943. The Gestapo required him to provide lists of local Jews according to criteria such as age groups....
