Aleksandrów, a village located about 15 kilometers southeast of the city of Biłgoraj, is the seat of the municipality (gmina) of Aleksandrów. During World War II it was part of Biłgoraj County within the Lublin District of the General Government (Generalgouvernement), the occupied part of Poland not formally annexed to the Reich. The population census from 1921 showed that there were fifty-six Jewish inhabitants in Aleksandrów.[1]
On September 14, 1939, Nazi forces occupied the area of Aleksandrów, followed by the Red Army ten days later.[2] On October 5, 1939, the Nazis reoccupied the area once again. From July 1941 onward, the Jews of Biłgoraj County were forbidden to leave their towns, villages, or ghettos, under penalty of death.[3]
In 1941, most of the 2,147 Jews of the municipality lived in Józefów Biłgorajski with only a few dozen living in Aleksandrów.[4] Unfortunately, we do not have the exact number of inhabitants of the village from this time....
