The village of Olchowiec is located 20 kilometers east of the town of Tarnogród in southeastern Poland. During World War II, it was part of the Babice municipality (gmina), in the Biłgoraj County, within the Lublin District, General Government (Generalgouvernement).[1]
German forces occupied the area on September 14, 1939, followed ten days later by the Red Army.[2] On October 5, 1939, the Germans reoccupied the area. Little is known about the events that followed.
A few facts about persecution of the local Jewish community by the Nazis have been preserved in Rafael Wasserman's testimony.[3] According to his account, five Jewish families lived in Olchowiec in 1939.[4] From July 1941 onward, the Jews in Biłgoraj County were forbidden to leave their towns and villages, or ghettos, under penalty of death.[5]...
