On May 30, 1944, the following announcement appeared in the Łódź ghetto: “Volunteers can still register for work outside the ghetto in the Employment Department, every day between 17:30 and 20:00.”
The Ghetto Chronicle authors assumed that it was a call for agricultural workers needed in small farms nearby. They also noted that the small groups of workers who had been sent away until then (on May 4, 17, and 27) remained on the ghetto’s food ration lists. “This does not mean that these workers don’t receive additional food provisions there,” commented the authors of the Chronicle, “but because there is no news from them, it is impossible to say anything else on this subject.” ...
