Krośniewice was occupied by the German army on September 16, 1939. On October 26, it was annexed to the so-called Wartheland, and administrated as part of the Landkreis (county) of Kutno. The county numbered approximately 110,000 people; some 10 percent of them were Jews. In Krośniewice, the Jews’ relative proportion was even higher—by the end of 1939, the 1,238 Jews comprised more than one third of the town’s population. By January 1, 1940, the number had risen to 1,600; by the end of the year, it stood at 1,700—340 of them refugees.
As in other places in Kutno County, the Jews’ persecution began immediately with the occupation. A ghetto was established on May 10, 1940. Between spring 1941 and spring 1942, at least four transports departed the ghetto, carrying hundreds of Jews—mostly men—to forced labor camps in the Wartheland.
