In the course of 1941, the Second Polizei-Revier (police district) of the Schupo (Schutzpolizei — uniformed regular police force) in Poznań (Posen) regularly recorded in their reports the presence of a small group of elderly Jews with Polish citizenship living on the premises of the Altersheim (old-age home) located at 5 Stawna (Teichstrasse) St.
The presence and the identity of the elderly individuals at the aforementioned address remains a mystery. The facility at 5 Stawna St. previously served as the Żydowski Dom Sierot Fundacji im. barona Kottwitza (Israelitischen Waisen-Knaben-Anstalt), an orphanage for Jewish boys from the Poznań Voivodeship. Both the wards and the staff of the orphanage were deported from Poznań on December 13, 1939. Due to the building’s proximity to several community and social help institutions situated at the heart of the city’s Jewish district, it is likely that the police report refers to former occupants of the nearby Schronisko dla Starców i Zniedołężniałych im.
