The first deportation of Jews from Konin took place in December 1939. The transport departed to Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski (Kielecki), removing approximately half of the town’s Jewish population.
The second deportation of the remaining Jews from Konin took place in the middle of July 1940. There are conflicting testimonies regarding the destination of this transport: Most of the survivors testified that they went directly from Konin to Grodziec (Grossdorf), approximately thirty kilometers away. Whereas others stated that besides Grodziec, some of the Jews were also sent to Rzgów (Roggen) and Zagórów (Hinterberg), approximately twenty and forty kilometers away from Konin. It is most likely that the deportees arrived first in Grodziec and from there they were spread among the villages in the vicinity, including Rzgów and Zagórów.
Hannah Gonsiorowicz, who was deported from Skulsk (Rollensee) to Grodziec in mid-July 1940, testified that the transport (horse-drawn wagons) passed through Ślesin (Schlüsselsee) and Konin and that the Jews from those towns had been deported a night earlier....
