The preparations for the transport leaving the Łódź ghetto for Chełmno on June 28, 1944, began on the previous day. It was the third of ten transports to leave the ghetto for Chełmno in June 1944.
One of the busiest places in the ghetto during the period of deportations was the courtyard at 4 Plac Kościenly. Peter Wertheimer, a ghetto resident originally from Germany, vividly described the situation in his diary on June 27: “In the middle of the courtyard [was] a mountain of red-colored duvets that people were selling in order to make money before they were taken to their unknown destination. The place turned into a market prior the deportation.” [1]
On June 28, 1944, the day of the transport, Jakub Hiller, one of the ghetto chroniclers, wrote in his diary: “David Warshawski[2] is gone. Rumors are that he will be on today’s transport. Today there are rumors that the first and second transports are in Kutno, but we don’t know if this is true. We take in every piece of information.”[3]...
