Transport from Rivesaltes, Camp, France to Drancy, Camp, France on 14/09/1942

The fifth transport of Jews out of Rivesaltes departed on Monday, September 14, from the Rivesaltes railway station and proceeded to the occupied zone via Toulouse and Vierzon. Its 594 deportees had come from Poland, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Russia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, the Saar region, Danzig, Slovakia, Latvia, Romania, and Lithuania; several were stateless. Ninety-two French gendarmes guarded the train, which was to depart at 7:00 a.m. and stop in Narbonne between 8:20 and 8:30. It reached the Le Bourget-Drancy station at 10:23 the next morning. The train was made up of 19 cattle cars and three passenger cars. One of the latter was reserved for the gendarmes; the other two were for women, children, and the ill. The floors of the former were strewn with straw that had been drawn from the three tons that the supply department had sent to the region. A container of drinking water, a bucket for use as a toilet, and a lantern had been placed in each cattle car. Each deportee was allowed to bring one suitcase, two blankets, and an extra pair of shoes. Food supplies sufficed for three days for the deportees and two days for the gendarmes. At this time, the French police informed the prefect of the Toulouse region that a transport of Jews escorted by 92 police was heading towards the occupied zone via Vierzon, that it would be crossing the Toulouse area on Monday, September 14, and that it would reach the Toulouse station between 11:58 a.m. and 12:08 p.m., the Montauban station between 1:10 and 1:20 p.m., the Cahors station between 3:02 and 3:12 p.m., and the Souillac station between 4:57 and 5:07 p.m....
