Fashioning small mementoes with visual depictions of life in the Lodz ghetto was one of the ways in which ghetto inmates attempted to maintain a semblance of freedom. Creating these mementoes necessitated technical expertise and artistic talent. The themes depicted on metalwork from the Lodz ghetto recur in drawings and photographs documenting ghetto life.
Four of the five links of the bracelet made in the Lodz ghetto depict scenes of ghetto life: Transporting loaves of bread in a wagon pulled along by two people, the spire of the Catholic church that stood next to the wooden bridge of the ghetto, a guard standing next to his booth at the entrance of the ghetto, and the workers whose task it was to pull the wagon carrying the sewage of the ghetto. The central link is engraved with the initials GF, and the dedication, "Marking 10 years of marriage, Sala and Shalmek, 30.9.43".
