At the outbreak of the war, Chanoch's parents were in the Soviet Union. His father died of starvation. His mother worked in kolkhoz, but could not support her children, and therefore, she sent them to Polish children's homes. After the war, Chanoch went to Poland with the Gordonia movement, and met two of his brothers. In 1947, he reached the Rescue Committee's children's home in Ulm, Germany.
