Many of the residents had moved to Sweden after the Holocaust, and afterwards arrived at a transit camp in Belgium. After 7 months there, they boarded the illegal immigrant ship Theodor Herzl and made their way to Eretz Israel. After a battle with a British ship off Tel Aviv's coast in April 1947, in which five of the ship's passengers died, they were sent to this deportation camp in Cyprus.
